Annuals – Brilliant Color and Variety

Annual produce awesome garden colors! They do well in containers, indoors or out, and they create wonderful beds and borders. They live for one growing season and then die, while perennials regrow every spring.

Annuals generally last from spring through the first frost of fall. Pansies, violas, and primroses are the exception and often winter-over, popping up beautifully following melting snow in Hampton Roads flower beds. They become stressed by warmer weather.

At Enchanted Forest Nursery and Stone, we carry a very wide variety of annuals each year, in all shapes and colors.

Popular in Hampton Roads summer beds are marigolds, daisies, geraniums, sweet peas, and zinnias, and so many more!

Perennials

A perennial is a plant that lives for more than two years. The term is often used to differentiate a plant from single-season annuals and biennials.. They are also distinguished as having little or no woody growth, Like annuals, there is a plethora of colors, from very small to quite large. .

Perennials, especially, flowering plant types, grow and bloom over the spring and summer, providing lots of colors, shapes, and sizes. Then they die back every autumn and winter, only to then return in the spring from their rootstock.

Perennials can be short-lived (only a few years) or they can be long-lived, as are some woody plants like trees. They include a wide assortment of plant groups, including orchids and certain grasses.

Hampton Roads is in Zone 8. Zone 8 perennials include Black Eyed Susans, Daylillies, Hibiscus, Ferns, and hundreds more.

Shrubs

A shrub or bush is a small to medium-sized woody plant. They are distinguished from trees by their multiple stems and shorter height usually under 20 feet tall. They add permanence to your environment as they are very long-lived.

An area of cultivated shrubs in a park or garden is known as a shrubbery. When clipped, they are known as topiaries. Many shrubs respond very well to renewal pruning, (photinia and ligustrum, for example) and are chosen for that purpose.

Shrubs are often purchased as centerpiece to help highlight a focused area for perennials or annuals
